In order to perform Agro Food Risk Analysis in the Basque Autonomous Community, several structures have been created: Scientific Committee (Risk Analysis body), Management Committees (Risk Management bodies), and Technical Committees in which ELIKA acts as Technical Secretariat.
With the aim of securing the continuous improvement of these structures, the following activities are being developed in 2007:
Improving the skills and methodology of the Scientific Committee
During the five years that the Scientific Committee has been in operation, it has analysed the capabilities of members in order to renew their profiles and to detect possible shortcomings. Likewise, in October, a second semi-quantitative methodology workshop in Risk Assessment, designed specifically for the Scientific Committee, is to be held.
Benchmarking of the Scientific Committee and Management Committees with the EFSA and the Commision
In order to continue making progress and enhance the good work of the Risk Analysis structures of the Basque Autonomous Community, in October a meeting is to be organised between these structures with the participation of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the European Commission. The aim is to share their experience with the European Procedure for Activities in the Identification, Assessment and Management of Risks and assess the possibility of applying this in the Basque Autonomous Community.
Developing the functions of the Technical committees
Throughout this year, the Technical Agricultural Committee will be created with the increased participation of the Technical Livestock Committee in the development of its functions:
- Identify risks and provide the information required in order to allow their assessment by the Scientific Committee.
- Study the technical feasibility of putting into practice the recommendations issued by the Scientific Committee in order to provide the Management committees with advice on their decision-making processes.
