Labelling of food products
All consumers have the right to healthy, varied and quality foods and for this reason
any information relating to the composition, manufacturing processes and use of foods
must be clear and precise. Accordingly, the
Royal Decree 1334/1999, of July 31, approved the general standard for the labelling, presentation and advertising
of food products, and article 5 defines, compulsory instructions that must appear on the labelling of food products.
Allergen label
Through Royal Decree 2220/November 26 2004,
the Community Directive containing the decision of the Human Foods Scientific Committee
(Directive 2003/89), to oblige producers, as of November 2005,
to indicate in the labels of foodstuffs and alcoholic beverages any ingredients present in their composition that might
cause allergic reactions or intolerances in persons prone to suffering from these disorders, is law in this country.
In this way, consumers will be better informed and those persons who are affected by such reactions or intolerances will be
provided with greater protection.

Labelling of beef
Due to the crisis brought about by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), the beef sector was
obliged to recover the confidence of consumers, and the solution chosen to transmit transparency,
confidence and reliability was based on the traceability of beef canals throughout the production
stage, slaughter and sale with an identification and associated registry system. For this reason,
ELIKA continues offering an information service to professionals in the sector and to consumers
themselves.

Royal Decree 1698/2003, of December 12 have been drawn up.

What is it?
Traceability is the capacity to follow the complete process, at all stages of production, transformation,
distribution and commercialisation of agro-food products, or of any of their ingredients.
In accordance with this concept, article 18 of the
Regulation 178/2002 of January 28 which establishes food safety procedures and which will come
into force in January 2005, stipulates that agro-foods and animal feed companies shall apply identification systems
and procedures to make information relating to their traceability available and to be able to label agro-foods products
in accordance with this information.
