In line with European directives, ELIKA bases its Risk Assessment work on the best
scientific know-how. Thus, in January 2002, the Scientific Committee (SC) was formed as the advisory and
consultative body in Agrofoods Safety. The SC meets periodically to assess the exposure of the population of the
Basque Autonomous Community to specific food risks and to study measures to reduce these. This Scientific Committee
operates on the basis of the independence and excellence of its members and the transparency of its advice.

Likewise, in July 2003, the Management Committee was created to coordinate this work and in order to be able take
political decisions in response to the recommendations of the Scientific Committee aimed at reducing food-transmitted risks.
When these risks affect the primary sector, they are assessed previously by the Management Committee of Agriculture.
