Alert Management / Alert Unit

Food safety and protecting the interests of consumers are the main objectives of the policy of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Basque Country.

Although the aim of all the activities developed by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is to prevent Agro-food Alerts, there is always the possibility that a problem might occur, leading to an Alert.

When the alert occurs, speed is essential. The situation requires a rapid appraisal and a number of decisions must be taken, in order to carry out the action required to protect the consumers of the Autonomous Basque Community.

In collaboration with the Provincial Councils, Neiker and ELIKA, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Basque Government has drawn up an Alert Management Protocol and created the Agro-food Alert Unit within ELIKA.

In the case of an agro-food alert that affects the Autonomous Basque Community, the Alert Unit compiles and analyses the pertinent information. This is distributed immediately to the competent authorities immediately in order to withdraw, immobilise and/or eliminate the affected product rapidly and efficiently.
